Germany’s manufacturing PMI came in at 51.2, just shy of the 51.3 expectation for April. While still in expansionary territory, this miss suggests that industrial momentum might be slowing down. We should therefore anticipate a cautious tone for assets linked to the German and broader European economy.
This slight weakness could put a cap on the DAX index, which has a heavy industrial weighting. We should consider buying put options on the DAX as a hedge against a potential pullback over the next few weeks. Looking back, we saw similar PMI misses in late 2025 precede minor market corrections of 2-3% over the subsequent month.
The data also puts downward pressure on the euro, as Germany is the core of the Eurozone economy. This reinforces a bearish short-term outlook for the EUR/USD pair, making put options on the euro attractive. With Eurozone core inflation recently dipping to 2.1%, the European Central Bank has less reason to support the currency with hawkish policy.
This softer economic signal reduces the likelihood of any rate hikes from the ECB later this year. This environment makes German government bonds (Bunds) more appealing, so we should look at call options on Bund futures. We observed this same pattern in the second half of 2025, when slowing data caused a rally in fixed income as rate expectations were lowered.
The surprise, although minor, introduces uncertainty about the strength of the economic recovery. We could buy call options on the VSTOXX index, Europe’s main volatility gauge, as a cost-effective hedge. With the VSTOXX averaging a low 14 so far in 2026, this kind of portfolio protection is relatively cheap.
